M. citrifolia fruit contains a number of phytochemicals, including lignans, oligo- and polysaccharides, flavonoid, iridoids, fatty acids, scopoletin, catechin, beta- sitosterol, damnacanthal, and alkaloids. The ashwagandha contains alkaloids and steroidal lactones. These include tropine and cuscohygrine. The leaves contain the steroidal lactones, with anolides, notably withaferin A.
